with president obama among registered voters, 46% even. four weeks ago pew had obama up by nine among registered voters, so this has been a huge shift in the pew poll. the move in the pew poll towards romney is greater among likely voters. romney is surging ahead to 49%. four weeks ago obama led among likely voters by eight. now to the latest gallup tracking poll which covers the last seven days. gallup has president obama back in the lead at 50 to 45. what a difference from the other polyp that's exactly where the race stood before the debate. romney had surged in the tracking poll. the two candidates were actually tied in the three days immediately after the debate, but the president seems to have wiped out romney's gains in the gallup poll. joining me right now are howard fineman, editorial director of the "huffington post," and the honorable michael nutter, mayor of philadelphia and presidential surrogate in this tough campaign. gentlemen, thank you for joining us. always go to the elected official first. mr. mayor, what needs to be done right now to right this ship, to get obama back on a w

% for obama, a four-point spread. that's a 12-point spread in only, what, three weeks, shall we say? and clearly the major development was his strong performs at that debate. >> you know, wolf, it just shows you that voters are still really weighing the pluses and minuses of these two candidates. what i really need to see, though, to make any judgment about how this is going to really affect the election or how it has affected voters is i need to look in the battleground states, don't you think? you need to look at the battleground state of ohio. you need to look at wisconsin. you need to look at iowa. you need to look at virginia, florida, and see whether in fact the race has tightened, particularly in a state like ohio, wolf, where the president had a commanding lead by five or six points. let's see if in that state which the republican campaign has to win, i believe, if mitt romney's to become president, let's see if the poll numbers in that state of ohio which we're going to see as this week proceeds, let's see if those numbers have tightened there because that's going to be a k

that obama -- that romney needed going into this, you know, with just a couple weeks away? >> it's very much the narrative he needed, because his campaign was about to be blown away. president obama generally has been running a much better campaign than mitt romney has, but in the last week or so, the mitt romney campaign i think is getting its act together. he had a very, very good debate, obviously. he was more personal on the stump, he was in florida the last few days, he was willing to talk in an emotionally connective way. he gave a foreign policy speech today that was -- had a lot of vagueness in it but was by far and way the best foreign policy speech in my judgment he's made, the most comprehensive on the middle east. he's finding his voice, finding solidity but the polls are really hard to understand right now. not only this pew poll but we had one of the strangest days in polling in gallup i have ever seen. this morning they put out a tracking poll that said the race was tied. this afternoon they put out a second tracking poll saying obama had a five point lead. what can you make o

's poor performance last week. also, this is a campaign where president obama is running as much against paul ryan's ideas as he is against mitt romney. that elevates ryan as well. >> it seems clear in choosing chris van holland they will go against the first ryan budget, the first medicare plan and also the ryan book. they will go after the budget cuts and troo to tag mitt romney with the severity, using the term relatively, of the ryan budget cuts. >> right. rom uh any down played the ryan road map. keep in mind the first ryan budget plan included privatizing social security, at least to a certain extent. that's something ryan then dropped in his subsequent budgets. it was there and he was one of the advocates of the plan to put it in the market. secondly the medicare issue. those entitlements, we'll ha from biden about thursday. a lot of democrats think he dropped the ball not pushing the issues against mitt romney. joe biden will read ryan's book and go after those entitlements. >> up next, as mitt romney focuses on foreign policy we'll get a reality check on the challenges abroad.
